Born 1904, in Pensacola, Florida. As a boy William attended segregated schools. Academically he did well and was admitted in 1923, to Howard University in Washington, D.C.. Grauated in 1930 with distinction.   


Allen became the first black diplomate of the ABR in 1935. Five years later became the first black member of the ACR, and in 1945, the first black fellow. In 1974, he received a golf medal from the ACR, recognition of a career in which he overcame prejudice to become an excellent clinical radiologist; a tear of residents, medical students, and radiologic technologists.
